Kickin’ it old school with Dirt and Worms

I still remember the day I came home telling my mom I had eaten dirt and worms.  I was in Kindergarten, and our teacher Ms. Monticello, had made dirt and worms and presented it to us in this beautiful flower pot.  It was magical.  And so delicious.  I think my brain had a hard time figuring out how something that was supposed to be so gross tasted so damn good.  Looking back — I wonder if I should have been a little smarter at 5 years old — but that’s a post for another day.

ANYWAY, fast forward to last week when we took a family vacation to Disney World for the first time.  C fell in love with dirt and worms here — and it was just as magical as the first time I had it.  There was just something in his smile that brought me back to the feeling I had when I was little.

The day we landed (no joke), C wanted to make them.

I think the process was almost more fun than the finished product.

Make your kiddos’ food dreams come true!

  • 1 pkg. (3.9 oz.) Jell-O Chocolate Flavor Instant Pudding
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1/2 tub (4 oz.) Cool Whip, thawed
  • 15 Oreos, finely crushed (about 1-1/4 cups), divided
  • 10-12 gummy worms

  1. Beat pudding mix and milk in a large bowl with a whisk for about 2 minutes.  Let stand for 5 minutes.  Stir in the Cool Whip and half of the Oreo crumbles.
  2. Spoon into cups and top with the remaining cookie crumbles.
  3. Refrigerate 1 hour.  Top with gummy worms just before serving.
