Enjoy this creamy three-ingredient hot cocoa dip with a beautiful cookie platter! Whether served with cookies or fresh fruit, this simple treat adds a cozy touch to any winter gathering.

The only thing I can say about this hot cocoa dip is if you leave it around children, make sure to give the supervising adult (cough…John…) some explicit instructions to monitor the total destruction that will inevitably ensue. On New Year’s Day, I was going to the spa with a girlfriend and left a tray of cookies with this hot cocoa dip for John to put out when the kids had friends over. My husband followed instructions and then promptly left the room, never to return to the basement.

    Sugar high.

My kids couldn't eat dinner that night because their bellies were so full, and I'm sure the other kids had the same issue. I'll take that as a good sign they loved the dessert tray...and next time consider giving more instructions once the cookie platter is made public.

    Why You’ll Love this Recipe

    • Light and Airy: Whipped topping is one of those things you can eat the whole tub of if you’re not careful. It’s a light and airy dip – making it feel less heavy and filling.
    • Easy Preparation: With only three ingredients required, this dip is incredibly simple to make, saving time and effort. It takes all of 1 minute.
    • Versatile Pairings: Whether enjoyed with cookies, fruit, or pretzels, this dip offers endless possibilities for pairing, making it a versatile and crowd-pleasing addition to any gathering or snack time.
    • Kid-Friendly: I can’t tell you how excited kids get when they see this hot cocoa dip with a bunch of vessels to get it in their mouth.

Just 3 Ingredients for This Cookie Dip

All you need is frozen whipped topping that’s been defrosted (aka Cool Whip), your favorite hot cocoa mix, and cocoa powder for dusting.

I absolutely am obsessed with Williams Sonoma’s hot chocolate. You will use the mixture but not make the hot chocolate.

How to Make Hot Cocoa Dip

This recipe is more of a PSA than a recipe because it’s so easy to make hot cocoa dip. Simply put your whipped topping and hot cocoa mix together in a bowl and give it a good stir. Top with a dusting of cocoa powder and put whatever cookies you want to serve with it.

    And the crowd goes wild!

What to Serve with Hot Cocoa Dip

COOKIES! This hot cocoa dip is perfect for a large cookie platter. I went ham at Trader Joe's one day and bought iced gingerbread men, chocolate covered star cookies, mini chocolate wafers, then gathered a couple other things I had in the pantry like mini marshmallows and Teddy Grahams.

FRUIT! If you wanted to make this a healthier snack, you could dip with fruit. Bananas, strawberries, pineapple, mango...it would all be delicious.

PRETZELS! The saltiness of pretzels make it a good vessel to get the hot cocoa dip in your mouth.

    Helpful Tips

    • Make sure to put your Cool Whip in the refrigerator overnight…or at least give it a couple of hours in the refrigerator so it can thaw. You can't use the whipped topping frozen.
    • Use a rubber spatula or a spoon to mix the whipped topping and hot cocoa mix together. Don’t use a mixer because the whipped topping will break down.
    • Experiment with different hot cocoas. There are some that have a lot of texture because they have chocolate shavings (as does the one I used from Williams Sonoma) and some are fine powder. There is dark chocolate hot cocoa, peppermint hot cocoa, hazelnut hot cocoa...lots of options.

    Variations

Try adding a drop of peppermint extract for a minty fresh dip.

If you want to make the dip more decadent, try folding in marshmallow fluff to the hot cocoa dip for an ooey gooey dip.
